New EEO-1 Reporting Requirement
Effective September, 2007
Private employers with 100 or
more employees and federal contractors who have
contracts totaling $50,000 and who employ 50 or
more employees must file a revised Employer
Information Report (EEO-1) by September 30, 2007.
The EEOC has changed the form for the first time
in 40 years.
While the forms do not need
to be filed until September, companies should
start now with proper data collection. Employers
who periodically ask their employees to update
personal information can use these periodic
requests to ask employees to confidentially
self-identify. For example, the form has changed
a number of race and ethnic categories. It has
added a new category titled “Two or more races.”
It has also divided “Asian or Pacific Islander”
into two separate categories: “Asian” and “Native
Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.” It has also
renamed “Black” as “Black or African American,”
and “Hispanic” as “Hispanic or Latino.”
In addition, changes have
been made to job categories. “Officials and
Managers” is divided into two levels based on
responsibility and influence. Certain business
and financial occupations have been moved from the
“Officials and Managers” category to
Professionals.
Only Section D of the form
has changed. The other sections remain the same.
Forms should be filed online, as has been allowed
in the past. The new form and a variety of
information concerning these changes can be found
on the EEOC’s website at
www.eeoc.gov/eeo1/index.html. It is
anticipated other EEO forms will be updated and
revised over the next couple years.
Please contact Doug Witte
with any questions about the new EEO requirements.
